While Amazon’s Echo seems to triumph – at least from a critic’s point of view – across the Atlantic and across the Channel, that Google Home takes its brands, the idea of having an enclosure that gives access to a personal assistant may begin to seduce.
Its devices, rather design, that can be placed in any room and connected to the Internet, can be used to interrogate an intelligent assistant that will give you information based on your queries, needs and habits.
According to The Verge, Microsoft would therefore be in the process of planning, not a dedicated device, but a feature that would be incorporated into updates of Windows 10 scheduled for 2017 and 2018.
Windows Central, which had been the first to echo this leak indicated that the giant of Redmond hearing “crush” the competition with a product designed on the same basis as the Echo, Amazon. A device that was to be unveiled last October… but has not been.
Windows 10, anywhere in your home
For sources of The Verge, it will be in fact only a feature of Windows. With HomeHub, Microsoft wants to create a family environment on a PC – which would complement the previous efforts for the creation of accounts in the family, for the establishment of control of the private data of different users or even for the sharing of applications.
HomeHub would thus make it possible to share appointments, apps and other data on the PC without having to connect to an account. It would thus be possible to access programs that are “simple” without opening user session. HomeHub would also provide and opportunity to ask questions to Cortana from the lock screen of Windows 10.
A screen that would be redesigned and probably renamed to be called home screen or welcome. It would display a full-screen interface, with notes and an agenda shared, a shortcut to Cortana, etc
Because, the intelligent assistant from Microsoft will be obviously at the heart of this whole strategy of conquest of our home. Already built-in to every Windows PC 10, its presence on Android and iOS, and on the Xbox One – may also suggest that the us giant could use our smartphones and other devices to increase the sphere of influence of its hub in the home. His omnipresence is deemed so in the light of the Windows 10 and Microsoft services in our lives.
The functions of Windows 10 HomeHub could allow to control and manage smartphones, tablets and other connected objects of our house. Until now, Microsoft has stayed back in this area, leaving a free hand to Google and Amazon. While many rumors are state of intensive work at Apple to give more power to Siri and integrate it into a new iteration of a Apple TV redesigned.
Microsoft would choose for the moment not to embark on the creation of a dedicated product. On the other hand, the establishment and provision of such tools and interfaces could encourage manufacturers of connected devices to begin production of competitors to the Amazon Echo or Google Home. This might as well be a PC all-in-one for the kitchen as well as a refrigerator equipped with a large slab, like the ones you see from far away, for example.
For the time being, Microsoft is only at the stage of planning, a lot of functions could be introduced, advanced, or disappear by the start of the project. One thing is certain, your living room will certainly very soon be a battle field for the giants of high tech.
