The modular phone Ara postponed to 2016 – Canoeing

Developed by Google ATAP group used particularly innovative technological prowess, the Ara Project comes as a modular phone, both economic, ecological and customizable.

The idea is to set up telephone composed of many small blocks corresponding to as many components: processor, memory, camera, speaker, 3G chip, etc.

Each of these elements, starting with the screen. can be changed at any time in case of failure, breakage, or simply in order to improve the performance of the device. Beyond the savings it could generate for users, the project also fight against planned obsolescence phones.

In early 2015, a prototype called Spiral 2 was introduced, then supposed to be finalized soon marketed in several test markets by the end of the year.

Project managers have finally pushed back to 2016 the launch of this new type of phone, explaining on Twitter that he needs more tests and simulations than expected. Still, many partners already are working already on compatible modules.

Google ATAP is already at the root of many more or less successful projects, such as Tango (3D mapping) or Soli ( radar capable of capturing the movements of fingers and interpret them to interact with a connected device)
