Wear Android watches are now compatible with the iPhone – 01net

We had it revealed last March, it is now official: Wear the Android watches will work with the Apple iPhone. Suffice it to download the application “android wear for iOS”, which will be available in the coming hours on the App Store. Once installed, this application will support a series of interactions between the smartphone and the connected watch.

In particular, the user can read his messages and alerts from applications, follow his sporting activity – including heart rate – Fit with Google and receive practical notifications from Google Now: appointments, traffic info, airline boarding … The user can also access the intelligent voice assistance from Google using the “OK Google” command (and thus bypass some way Siri, the Apple equivalent service).

No third party apps

But compared to Apple Watch, interactions are nevertheless very limited. Thus, we can not respond to a notification, except Gmail. We can control playback of music, but it will not be possible to make very advanced research. And above all, we can not install third-party apps on its shows connected.

Next, it must be emphasized that “android wear for iOS” will not work with older Android watches. To date, there is only one that supports iOS, the LG Watch Urbane. Huawei, Asus and Motorola should also soon provide consistent watches. Smartphone side, there must be an iPhone 5 or higher with iOS 8.2 or higher.

In short, what are we to make of all this? The compatibility between iOS and android wear is pretty nice and brings a certain openness to the market for connected watches. But it does not go beyond a basic use, in any case for the moment. It is therefore not an alternative to native interactions (Apple Watch with iOS, Android Wear with Android). But it’s better than nothing.
