It is called” RankBrain “and perhaps represents the future the search engine Google. In production for a few months, this new algorithm uses artificial intelligence to find the most relevant results to a search. It is used, in particular, to meet the requests totally unknown, which still represent 15% of the total query volume.
Asked by Bloomberg Greg Corrado, a researcher at Google, has lifted the veil on this new technology. The objective of RankBrain is to really understand the user’s query from a semantic point of view. For this, says Corrado, Google’s servers store large amounts of language elements in mathematical entities called “vectors”. More semantic meaning two language elements is near, more mathematical vectors will be similar.
A technology already become inescapable
Faced with an unknown application RankBrain will guess its meaning by drawing on this basis vectors to find or in terms that most closely . Over time, this algorithm refines increasingly its analysis through its automatic learning capabilities. And success is with go. According to Mr. Corrado, RankBrain is now the third most important factor in the calculation of research results from a total of several hundred items that Google includes in its servers. “ I was surprised. It was better than we thought , “says the researcher.
This is all the more impressive as still RankBrain young. The project started about a year ago with a team of five people. Today it has dozens of engineers.
Google is not the only company to leverage AI. Other high tech giants also use artificial intelligence techniques, either to improve search results (Microsoft Bing) or customize the display of a news feed (Facebook).
