Hololens arrives in France. Sold since a few months in the United States and Canada, it can now be ordered in France (but also in Germany or the United Kingdom). First deliveries in November. If you do not know the expression “to pay the’ painful, hold on there a lot : the helmet augmented reality is sold online at a price that oscillates between 3299 € (Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition) and 5489 € (Microsoft HoloLens Commercial) piece.
Announced in the past two years by Microsoft, the company’s communication around Hololens pitching since between two capes : appeal to the general public by putting eyes full or to convince professionals of the relevance of the value proposition for the business. “We have not built this device just for its technological prowess,” says Ben Reed, in charge of the commercial strategy of Hololens, “We think it has great potential for business”.
Some have access to it for free thanks to their partnership with Microsoft. This is the case of the French company Novencia, ESN specializes in the areas of banking and finance. “I have used it almost every day since last July,” says Fabrice Jean-François, one of the engineers of the company. Programming of the API, tests the possibilities and limits, demonstrations of all kinds ; the young man was pushed to the bottom of the tool’s potential for long hours.

Balance : “it All depends on the mastery of the Unity engine (multi-platform) and of the constraints of programming Hololens. The knowledge of the API, which is very well documented, is very important for this.”
“Then, it must be understood that Hololens and its development environment evolves,” assures his colleague Alain Belut. Intel reviews, for example, even at this time the processors that equip the helmet. So what is gained today will not necessarily be tomorrow. Ensure that the latest developments in Microsoft and its partners, to the enrichment of the discussion forums specialized or even to the evolution of the API are therefore points of vigilance major.
Hololens among traders ?
Side trades, Novencia is working on usage scenarios oriented market hall, with the dataviz as a compass. The two engineers imagine for example a use which allows you to deport a part of the financial information out of multiple screens of the traders, to observe “in several dimensions”.
of course, this is not enough to make a POC. “It is still very exploratory. It is necessary to link the data visualization to machine learning and Big Data to go to logical decision-making” says Alain Belut. “This is where these technologies can create value on the process of lean or Six Sigma” completes Fabrice Jean-François. “The visualization of data, even with the augmented reality, is only a brick of this technological chain”.
Still, the augmented reality to the sauce Microsoft impresses strongly the two engineers, who were accustomed to manipulating the motion sensor Leap Motion or the Kinect. Enough in any case to assess the relative effect Whaoo Pokémon Gb, which, however, is severely hit France in the summer. “Augmented reality Pokemon Gb, for me, this is not really” explains Fabrice Jean-François. “I thought that when we would see a Pokemon, it would be interactive. This is not the case, it remains immutable.” In hollow it is understood that the major innovation proposed by Hololens, it is the opportunity to interact with holograms in a dynamic way.
Already in the elevators and in NASA
other than Novencia have had the privilege to test the helmet augmented reality. As well, Thyssenkrupp, specialist lifts, has equipped fifty of the employees of the machine. “The integration of Microsoft HoloLens in our business processes allows us to reduce up to four times our time of interventions,” explained Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevators.
NASA for it astronauts and Airbus tests the vehicle in a scenario of design and construction of its aircraft. On the consumer side, Microsoft is working with the film production company Legendary.
IDC says that the worldwide revenue of the market of technologies of augmented reality and virtual will increase from $ 5.2 billion in 2016 to $ 162 billion in 2020.
