Microsoft announces virtual reality headsets finally affordable for Windows – Frandroid

There may be cheaper products announced by Microsoft yesterday at its conference. Between the Surface Book 2399 $ and the Surface Studio at $ 3000, the firm of Redmond has announced the arrival of reality helmets Windows very accessible, manufactured by its partners.

The market of virtual reality is a market in full expansion as well in the field of video game that with other uses such as education, tourism, the creation or consumption of media. Today, this market is cut into three segments with the virtual reality headsets mobile, like the Samsung Gear VR, less than 100 euros, the PlayStation VR from Sony at 399 euros and headsets for the PC, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, to more than 800 euros. Microsoft has presented yesterday something that could democratize virtual reality on a PC.

The first headsets available for the PC

As announced earlier at Computex this year, the editor of Windows is surrounded by its partner manufacturers (Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo) to build virtual reality headsets under Windows environment much less expensive than the competition, since they are advertised from us $ 299. Microsoft specifies that to work, the headsets will not require a high end PC as is the case for Oculus. A PC or a laptop PC affordable will be compatible.

A simple configuration, without camera

These helmets will be in addition fairly simple to configure since there will be no camera external to install unlike the products of Sony, HTC or Oculus. In effect, each helmet includes the sensors and cameras on the front, as the helmet of mixed reality Hololens, which allow the object to scan its environment and navigate the space independently.

As on the Hololens, the cameras are located on the headset, and this means thathe will spend his hands in his field of vision so that they are recognized. Otherwise, it is necessary to use devices (mouse, keyboard, controller, etc) but the movements of the user should not be recognized as controllers of the HTC Vivid or the PS Move Sony.

Windows Holographic

Unlike the HTC Vivid and to the Oculus Rift using independent platforms, helmets presented yesterday by Microsoft, should all be of the accessories of Windows 10 Creators Update, the next version of the system coming out in the beginning of the year 2017. This means that the environment and the interface will be very similar to those used on the headset, Microsoft Hololens, virtual reality in the least.

No availability will be announced

On the other hand, Microsoft has not given any detail on the helmets of its manufacturers. What was presented on stage was probably a prototype, which we don’t even have the brand, and the firm of Redmond has announced a release period or availability.

Windows 10 Creators Update should come out at the beginning of the year 2017, and these headphones have been featured as accessories in this update. Hope that the manufacturers will not be slow to pull out their devices. The ces in Las Vegas in early January could be a chance for them to announce their helmets.

And the Xbox ?

The first use of virtual reality is today the video game. Each of the helmets, in particular those of Oculus, HTC, and Sony, is sold as props. However, Microsoft has not mentioned the Xbox one during the announcement of these virtual reality headsets.

Xbox Project Scorpio

The firm is currently preparing a new version of the Xbox, known as Project Scorpio, it was unveiled at E3 and will be compatible with virtual reality. Project Scorpio is expected by the end of the year 2017. It seems still strange that Microsoft has not wanted to announce a compatibility of these headphones with the console, even though it now runs on Windows 10.
