We tried the most affordable new MacBook Pro – 01net.com

Its design refined compared to the previous generation, its huge trackpad and the new keyboard : this is what jumps to the eyes when using for the first time this new 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple has further reduced the volume of the set of approximately 20 % compared to the previous generation, and it feels from the outset : the new Macbook does more than 1,49 cm thick for a weight of 1.37 kg. But this has a setback : in order to slim down its machine, Apple got rid of the connectors too bulky in integrating here that the USB Type-C, very compact. It should be noted that this version 1 699 euros has only two – on the left side of the machine instead of four on the other models in the range.

The keyboard is the one inherited from the MacBook 12-inch : the keys are fine and they run very short. The noise when you press them is also disturbing during the first few minutes of use, very flashy. Phew, we can quickly learn to type a little less hard to be more discreet ! The keyboard, surprising at the beginning, nevertheless remains comfortable and gives the impression of being able to enter text more quickly.

A trackpad that you can’t miss

The trackpad is huge, twice as large as on the previous generation. There is a tendency to place the hands as soon as one uses the keyboard. But you can be assured, no activation pop up is to be deplored.

Its size is rather an advantage : it lets you use the different gestures built-in to macOS very comfortably, in all applications : keep your fingers to zoom in a photo, rotate to change the orientation or move four fingers up to use App Exposé, without asking the question as to whether all the fingers are properly positioned on the touch surface.

If the Retina display always displays the same resolution 2 560 x 1 600 points, Apple has boosted its performance, with such a brightness announced 500 cd/m2. Side processor, it’s a Core i5 dual core 2 GHz, sixth-generation, which has been chosen (a Core i7 is available as an option). Astonishing when one knows that the seventh generation “Kaby Lake” is now in production on the side of Intel. Has it, Apple replied that they had need of processors to four cores for models 15-inch, a feature that is not available from this seventh generation.

Already a lack of Touch Bar

the question Remains painful of the absence of Touch Bar. After using a few tens of minutes, a model incorporating this new system, one has the impression that it lacks an important feature, as if the MacBook was not really a model of 2016 but a revised and updated version of the previous iteration.

Certainly, this MacBook Pro entry level is a good machine, the screen is bright, the keyboard is comfortable and fast, the responsiveness is impeccable. Remains that after having used Touch Bar, one cannot help but be disappointed not to find it on this version. Those who are also in need of a connection abundant will be too limited by the two-port USB Type-C. Add 300 euros to take advantage of the real new features of this MacBook Pro can be seriously considered.
