Android and iOS apps on Windows 10 more complicated than a simple … – ZDNet France

Paul Thurrott yesterday announced before the opening of the conference Build 2015: Microsoft will open up to Android and iOS applications. The publisher has actually made announcements on this, but the reality is somewhat more complex. Not here Android compatibility as implemented by BlackBerry.

So, otherwise, users will not be able to automatically execute apps from the Android universe on terminals under Windows 10. The idea is rather to allow developers to more easily carry their software on the Microsoft environment.

From the software emulation, but not that

As the result of our brothers and ZDNet.com The Register, the principle returns to “reuse” code rather than “run”. The developers have designed for Android apps? Microsoft will provide a way to reuse their Java and C ++ code.

But the company also wishes to adapt their applications to use the specifics of its platform. Developers therefore have much to go through the design of extensions to the original code.

“To make this possible, Windows phones include Android subsystem”. The code name of this subsystem: Project Astoria. For now, the publisher did not provide technical details, but the Build conference is after all not complete.

So it is not known what Android APIs will be supported. Presumably the APK file will actually work without having to go through the source code changes. Moreover, with Astoria, Microsoft will provide Java developers to exploit what Windows API.

The purpose, anyway, is not to make Windows a distributor Android applications. Microsoft first tries to streamline developments to encourage publishers, when designing an application to run on both Android and Windows.

And for iOS apps, the concept remains the same. The Astoria for the Apple environment, the project according to Paul Thurrott Islandwood. During the keynote, Terry Myerson Microsoft has explained that Objective-C compiler for Windows Studio was designed. It is available for download from April 29.

The development tools should allow to import XCode projects in Visual Studio to convert universal iOS applications in Windows apps. Again, this is for the firm to provide developers something to make life easier and thus encourage them to think more easily to Windows.

Microsoft has no intention of focus exclusively on developers of mobile apps though. Web developers and software classics have their place in the strategy of the publisher.

For example, .Net and Win32 software can enter the Windows Store. Microsoft will use this to its App-V technology. “With Apple, you choose to invest in iOS or Mac OS. With Google, you choose to invest in Android or Chrome OS. Windows is the only ecosystem that allows you to effectively carry your applications on all terminals” boasts the OS boss at Microsoft, Terry Myerson
