Fibre Orange will fully cover nine cities by the end of 2016 – ZDNet France

With domestic uses that continue to explode, the optical fiber is the operators investment center. Orange has announced its intention to “widen the gap with the competition” by targeting 12 million eligible households at the end of 2018 and 20 million at end 2022 against 4 million today thanks to 3 billion euros of investments. “Orange alone will bear the bulk of national deployments,” insists Stéphane Richard, CEO of the operator, on Wednesday.

Responding to the demand of uses, of course. But st fiber first and foremost a value creation lever. As SFR / Numericable, the incumbent intends to improve ARPU via this technology. The recipe is simple: the more you offer rates, the more customers consume, including VOD, games, cloud … so many value-added services, the consumption is doubled with FTTH, provides Orange.

The group wants thus accelerating and “make a difference with the competition,” including SFR / Numericable which it is known offers a slightly different technology (FTTB, fiber to the building, then cable) but which has exactly the same ambitions Orange which already relies on a vast network.

But the operator has focused on well mark the differences or taunting his opponent technology which recently lowered its prices. “The fiber that goes to the customer’s home is the only technology to meet the usage. It now has more subscribers than cable and mainly provides much more satisfactory upload. Upload Video 80 MB and takes 32 seconds against 9 minutes for the cable “, asserts Delphine Ernotte, Executive Director. He added that the Jet and Fibre Pro customers will benefit even practice near Gigabit throughput on the mainland from late April.

The cover is also central to the strategy. As we said, the group is 20 million eligible households in 2022 but in the meantime, it promises to cover 100% new French cities by the end of 2016. These cities are: Bayonne, Brest, Caen, Lyon, the seven municipalities of the Lille Métropole, Metz, Montpellier, Nice and Paris.

“Paris will be the first European capital to be fully fibered” comments Stéphane Richard. In these nine cities, once coverage is reached, the ADSL offers are no longer marketed and systematically proposed fiber. “Only the network changes, no offers or services. For example, a client who is or wants dual play will not be forced to move to triple play. And there will be no rate increases as the fiber is sold at the same price as ADSL, “promises Delphine Ernotte.

It remains that term goal is to cut the ADSL network plates as in Massy for only operate and maintain that a single network. “But this perspective is still far away, simply because we are not the only ones using our network,” said the manager.

With this aggressive strategy, Orange is 1 million fiber customers against 600,000 aujourd ‘hui. And because believing that the fiber will be present in 100% of the territory in 2022 is a fantasy, the operator focuses on VDSL 2, which now affects 7.4 million lines. The operator nevertheless fails to mention that this technology is only valid for the nearby home of the NRA. The others have to accept the satellite or adapted 4G.
