The Google Pixel is only as secure as the iPhone 7 by Apple, and will soon be more. This is what said Adrian Ludwig to Motherboard on Tuesday, on the occasion of a conference on security. For the man in charge of securing the OS from Google, “in the face of most threats, they [the two operating systems, editor's note] are very close in terms of response capacity“. A point of view that goes against the grain of received ideas – and studies – according to which iOS would be better protected than its rival.
After eight years of existence, Android has yet accumulated the critical vulnerabilities. One of the last in date was about a billion terminals. Another major threat had been detected earlier in the year. But iOS is not preserved. The case of the malware Pegasus, or of the breach of security relating to the management of the images showed that the iPhone was also an ideal target, giving in part due to Adrian Ludwig. But if the part of Google refers mainly to the Pixel, it is that the other terminals are not equal in facing the threat.
The level of security of an OS comes, in large part, to its responsiveness to the discovery of security vulnerabilities. Apple is the master of parties hardware and software, fixes, patches are rapidly deployed among all of its users. It is far from being the case in Android, as it must pass through the different manufacturers, and then by the operators. Smartphones can therefore find themselves vulnerable for several weeks or even several months.
With the Pixel – not marketed in France for the moment, Google is now a manufacturer. For the first time, California can level the playing field with Apple against the attacks. But for the hundreds of millions of Android devices marketed furthermore, the deadlines remain as important as ever.
