The other announcement of Nissan on THESE 2017 for the autonomous car. His pet name for SAM, for Seamless Autonomous Mobility, this technology allows an operator to Nissan to take remote control of an autonomous vehicle. And to create it, Nissan is simply associated to the NASA, who knows already piloting a robot while he is on another planet.
Here the challenge does not impose such a distance, but Nissan could then take control of an autonomous vehicle while it is hundreds of kilometres away. What does it do ? Intervene when machine intelligence reaches its critical threshold and that the human logic must take him by the hand.
Example of a case in point : The autonomous vehicle travels on a track crowded by work. The soil is a continuous white line. Scrupulously adhering to the Code of the road, the Nissan autonomous cannot be deported not, not a matter of crossing a continuous line.
And many thanks to SAM, in this case, the vehicle can identify the complexity of the situation and contact a remote operator who can then take the hand on the autonomous car, with access to all its information : the GPS position and the mapping, the vision of his cameras, or the information from its Lidar (remote sensing using laser).
from there, the operator can draw at a distance, a path that the autonomous car will follow to resume his route, while maintaining a safe distance with his entourage. And as this autonomous car is plugged in – we don’t say whether there is a connection 4G – it is able to share information with other Nissan vehicles autonomous. They can then take their own decision if the work still prevent them from passing.
Behind this process lies simply in the ability of vehicles to communicate between themselves and learn from different situations that they encounter on the road.
This technology Seamless Autonomous Mobility is in the end an interesting solution that allows you to push a little bit further to the work conducted around the autonomous car, until this last one has become intelligent enough to make their own decisions. And between the arrival of the infrastructures are connected and the ability of vehicles to communicate with each other, we can say without taking too much risk, that this is not for any of the following.
