How Jean-Luc Mélenchon will he send his “hologram” from Lyon to Paris? – BFMTV.COM

on The 5th of February, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has announced a “world first”: it organizes a double political meeting, in Lyon and Paris, where he will be present at the same time. Obviously, the candidate to the presidential election has not the gift of ubiquity. Physically, he will be in Lyon. But in Paris, activists will, in fact, his “hologram”.

In reality, it will not be a true hologram, in the photographic sense of the term. It is complex to perform, requires the use of lasers and makes it possible to produce than still images. Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his campaign team has not specified the technology that will be used on the 5th of February, but it is very likely that it will be based on the principle of so-called “Ghost Pepper”, a technique of optical illusion invented in the 19e century by John Henry Pepper, a british scientist.

The projected image is not three-dimensional

The operation is fairly simple. A surface semi-transparent is placed in a space with a certain angle to reflect the image of an object located outside the field vis-à-vis the observer. This latter has therefore the impression that the object is actually in the space, so that it is in fact an overlay.

Since then, this technique has been further developed. Nowadays, the hidden object is replaced by a designer who disseminates the image to appear on a special plastic film that can be found under the name of “Pepper’s Ghost Foil” or “3D Holographic Foil”. This last term is obviously a misnomer, because the image obtained is not holographic or three-dimensional, since it is a projection on a flat surface.

This method is used in many shows. In the haunted house of Disneyland, it helps to raise ghosts. In concerts, it allows the appearance of the singers died. This was the case of Tupac in 2012, during a concert of Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg. Or Michael Jackson in 2014, on the occasion of the Billboard Music Awards.

The hologram of Jean-Luc Mélenchon is in real time

The show “Hit Parade”, which starts today at the Palais des Congrès of Paris, pushes the boat out a little further, to the extent that the representations projected of Dalida, Claude François, Mike Brant, and Sacha baron cohen are in the reality of the synthetic images obtained by motion capture.

In a video presentation, the company MDH Hologram – which is specialized in this type of process – shows what looks like a scene holographic.

In politics, the process is also used. In 2012, the prime minister of india Narendra Modi has used it to project a speech pre-recorded in some thirty different places. In 2014, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did the same thing. The originality of Jean-Luc Mélenchon is that it is – a priori – the first to achieve a “diffusion holographic” in real time, without pre-registration. Cameras will film it. The images obtained will be sent in real time to Paris, where they will be projected on the famous “holographic movie”.
