If Windows 10 on desktop continued to grow in scope at the outset by its free, Microsoft has quite frankly struggled to impose its systems dedicated to portable devices such as smartphones (Windows Phone and Windows 10 mobile) or tablets with the flop of Windows 10 RT for the terminal ARM.
so far, Redmond believes that the battle is far from lost. First, there are now universal apps that run as well on desktop as on mobile. But the firm would have in its drawers a new initiative code-named Cloud Shell. According to the leaks, it would be a lightweight version of Windows designed for the world of modern computing”.
so There could be a minimal version of the OS, embedded devices with less powerful (under ARM with the support of the chip Qualcomm), running the main tasks, the rest of the functions are concentrated in the cloud, hence the code name of this OS, and will only be used according to the needs. A bit like the thin client approach of Chrome OS. Microsoft would still online a wide range of services, including security.
The advantages are many : the range and power of the laptop machines would be strengthened with a BONE much less greedy. Alternatively, a user could regain his office, its settings, its applications and its data from any machine. For businesses, such an approach would limit the need of renewal of equipment and would greatly facilitate the software updates or security. Finally, this version would be well in line with the ambitions of Microsoft, which wants to make Windows a service (OS-as-a-service).
We are talking about a launch this year. To be continued…
