They were selling false licenses of Windows XP, they will have to pay 4.6 million euros to Microsoft – ZDNet France

There was a time, not so old as that, where Windows was not free. Worse, he had to get the OS on CD to install it on his PC while having a valid activation key. In short, buy its Windows store. But very quickly, we realised that it was possible to run pirated copies, retrieving or generating the activation keys. The practice was very intensive with Windows XP to the point of creating the business illegal, which had the same gear on the street.

Five French have had the idea to sell copies of XP hackers associated with the activation keys. These copies were purchased on the chinese sites, or recovered on old PC and sold online at prices ranging between 45 and 75 euros. What generate comfortable profits : 720.989 euros in two years, according to Microsoft, which obviously has referred the matter to the justice.

And this latest hit hard, the five defendants were sentenced on Tuesday by the TGI Bayonne to suspended prison sentences of 12 to 18 months and to 4.6 million euros in damages and interest to be paid to the american publisher.

Among the main accused, a bayonnais 46-year-old, police found 350 stickers software, white labels bearing the keys of activation as well as 160 Windows XP CD-Rom hacked. This buyer will need to pay to itself not less than a million euros of damage and interests.

interesting Point, their business would have started in 2008, there was thus at this time a strong demand for the venerable OS !
