ARM launches an operating system for connected objects – Clubic.com

Hardly born, the market for connected devices is already fragmented. The last attempt to unify the sector comes from ARM, and takes the form of an unexpected operating system. His name mbed OS

If ARM was becoming as ubiquitous in the Internet of Things as it is today in smartphones and tablets.? Britain’s hope so, and that’s what he showed Wednesday Techcon the San Francisco conference. The announcement is a new operating system designed specifically for connected objects. The name is chosen by ARM mbed OS and will be available in alpha version by the end of the year.

Free and built on an open standard, this OS is intended to unify the ecosystem Internet of things while alliances between manufacturers already begin to multiply (AllSeen Alliance, Open Interconnect Consortium …) as well as development platforms (AllJoyn, Busit, revolver, Sen.se …). For a standard emerges, it needs to attract many partners. ARM approached IBM, Salesforce or Telefonica. The problem is that these companies do not want to miss the boat and align themselves with other alliances

mbed OS supports a variety of standard wireless connectivity. Bluetooth Low Energy, 2G, 3G , LTE, CDMA, Threads, Wi-Fi (low consumption of Google, ARM and Samsung created in July 2014 standard) …

This operating system is also compatible with the 6LoWPAN standard for IPv6 Low Power Wireless Area Networks. This is somehow an adaptation of IPv6 network protocol for small bandwidths, sitting up a priori to low data transmission needs of connected objects.

But mbed OS does not come alone. The operating system is accompanied by the development platform mbed Device Server. Distributed under license, it will allow companies to manage their fleet of connected objects and secure data transmission and collection. Third and last brick of the new ARM features include: mbed.org site that centralizes resources for developers
