Microsoft boss says that women should not … – Slate.fr

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said something very weird when Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, Thursday, Oct. 9. He explained this to the public to celebrate women’s achievements in the world of technology (a sector that has diversity issues almost everywhere) that women should not request increases.

According to ReadWrite, during a rather tense discussion with computer science and president of Harvey Mudd College Maria Klawe, he reportedly said:

“It’s not so much asking for a raise, but more to know and to believe that the system will give you good increase.

And then he said that women who are silent have an advantage.

“It could be one of those” super powers “that women who do not request an increase. This is karma. At the end you will be rewarded. “

What would Grace Hopper that?

While the United States continues to struggle against the wage gap and the murmurs of improving diversity in the sector technology become real discussion, it seems pretty clear that the comments of Satya Nadella are crazy. Linda Babcock, an economist at Carnegie Mellon had told NPR in 2011 that if a woman refused to seek an early increase in his career, it could mean “loss of income from 1 to 1.5 million (from just under 790,000 and just under 1.2 million euros) during his life. “

But these public figures are human, right? Maybe Bill Gates has just misspoke thought. And then he apologized! You see, everything will work out.

“My response was poorly worded. Our industry needs to reduce the wage gap between women and men for an increase is not necessary to fill it.

At least he knows he made a mistake. And, yes, one of the objectives to be paid as much as men is to not have to request an increase just to close the gap. But even in Utopia, he will always be in our interest (men and women) in our case and ask for higher compensation at strategic times of our careers.

Getting to wage equality is important but it is also important to create a new standard where women are rewarded-or at least not pénalisées- if they are as sure of themselves as men can be right now.
