Google : a PC hybrid in preparation in Andromeda ? – ZDNet France

The next keynote of Google to be held on 4 October next may be provided in surprises, or even big ads. In addition to new smartphones, the giant of Mountain View could reveal new objects that are connected as a virtual reality helmet.

But it is on the side of the BONES that the giant is expected at the turn. According to the always well-informed Android Police, Google will be presenting the project Andromeda, which should be the result of the merger between Android and Chrome OS.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president, Android, Chrome OS & Play, also posted a tweet quite revealing : “We have announced the first Android version that 8 years ago today. I have the feeling that in 8 years we’ll talk again on October 4, 2016.”

Another rumor from our colleagues : this new OS would be loaded on a new PC of the range Pixel. The latter could be a hybrid (2-in-1) and play the card of the top of the range.

Known under the code name Buffalo, it embarquerait a screen of 12.4 inches and would be scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2017 with a price around $ 800. The machine would compete with the Surface Book that Microsoft and its competitors, all positioned on a segment still marginal but growing strongly.

Recall that the rumors paying Google intends to merge Android and Chrome OS are not new. And already, the reconciliation took place. Last may at its annual conference, Google announced the arrival of Google Play on Chrome OS.

After the developer version in June, and then beta in August, Google Play is now available on the stable version of Chrome OS. For the moment, only Chromebook Acer R11 and Asus Flip with the last update of Chrome OS (53.0.2785.129) can access it.

a year ago, the Wall Street Journal spoke of the projects of fusion similar but Google had strongly denied the charge. The same Hiroshi Lockheimer explained that Google is working “to bring users the best of both operating systems,” but stated, however, that this does not mean the abandonment of Chrome OS in the future : as a proof of his good faith, he mentions in his post on the changes which await the Google OS as well as the recent offers of manufacturers offering notebook embedded Chrome OS.

the fact Remains that the sales faiblardes Chrome OS via the Chromebooks are a matter of concern : if it seems to have found its place in american schools, it remains a relatively minor player in the market PC.

as Well, the Wall Street Journal already explained in his article that Google intended to continue the distribution of Chrome OS, especially in the world of business, despite a possible merger of the two operating systems.
