Canned tuna: Greenpeace denounces famous brands – Atlantico.fr

Greenpeace gave poor marks to brands of canned tuna. The NGO wanted to be emphasized that the vast majority of canned tuna sold in France was from unsustainable fisheries. The reason is twofold. Either it concerns destructive fishing techniques, or it’s because species are overexploited. Based on the information requested in the top ten brands of tuna present in France, Greenpeace achieved a ranking that includes the following criteria: stock status of fished species, fishing techniques, measures to prevent illegal fishing, traceability or consumer information

Brands ECKMUHL and Système U figure are good students. “These two brands are supplied mainly or wholly of sin through selective method tuna, cane or trolling, and using tuna from stocks in good condition, such as skipjack tuna,” says the NGOs.

It is not the same for other companies, including Carrefour, Auchan, Intermarket, Constable, Hot sauce, Small Vessel and Casino. “The supply of major brands is essentially a destructive fishing practice using fish aggregating device” laments the NGO.

Blamed for fishing techniques of its suppliers, Intermarket defends on the species used. “A little more than half the canned tuna is sold by Intermarket skipjack tuna whose stocks are in good condition,” rejoices Greenpeace.

Small Ship, “the information Greenpeace are not consistent with those we have provided to them.” “35% of the tuna caught is with fishing methods recommended by Greenpeace and 80% of our fish comes from cash and oceans where inventory levels are considered safe by scientists.”
