Sophie Healy-Thowdans, Emer and Ciara Hickey Judge are three young Irish 16. They have convinced the jury of the Google Science Fair 2014 and won the Grand Prix of the international innovation competition for young talents. In addition to acquiring the sum of $ 50,000, to win a ten-day trip in the Galapagos Islands and a backstage tour of Virgin Galactic, it’s mostly the reputation they have just come up with their research on the use of natural bacteria to fight against hunger in the world.
“We like microbiology, we love gardening and we want to solve the food crisis” say the three girls in their video presentation. They point to increase wheat yields. Their project was born after the 2011 famine in the Horn of Africa. The issue of food shortage has immediate awareness. They have conducted research on the use of diazotrophic bacteria to facilitate the germination and growth of cereals. A statistical analysis showed that this strain of bacteria increases crop germination up to 50% and yields of barley by 74%, which would fight against the problem of food poverty worldwide and to limit the use of fertilizers, harmful to the environment. They have won this prestigious award in the category of 15-16 years and coveted by several thousand participants across nearly 90 countries.
