The survey of the European Union on the business practices of Google coming to an end. What will be the punishment?
With 95% market share in Europe, including Google eclipses the competition represented by Yahoo! and Bing. The Mountain View search engine is accused of altering search results to favor its own services or those of its partners, which would therefore correspond to an abuse of dominant position. Furthermore, the content of other websites like Yelp or Amazon, would be extracted in order to enrich its engine and its services, a practice that removes traffic to their sites and alter their development.
order to shed light on these practices, the European Union started an investigation in 2010. Since then, Joaquín Almunia, Commissioner for Competition, tried unsuccessfully three times to reach an agreement with Google. The file is now in the hands of his successor: Margrethe Vestager
The latter argued that it would encourage law enforcement and punishment, rather than maintaining endless negotiations.
Today, this investigation to a close and the time of sanction approach. According to the Wall Street Journal, the EU’s sanctions should eventually be a fine, a penalty that could reach up to 10% of the last annual turnover of the company, about $ 6 billion.
Does this sanction will be really pronounced?
