Facebook now rules the smartphone – BBC

The social network wants to make himself indispensable on our smartphones with its application two weeks.

Facebook has not always been lucky on the mobile. First witness the first and only smartphone launched by the social network in 2013, which was a dismal commercial failure. Two years later, Facebook takes his revenge. With its fifteen mobile applications among the most popular (Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram …), the social network does not need to manufacture our smartphone: he now embodies whole

In a few. years, Facebook has become a clear commitment to the small screen. The social network now has 1.2 billion monthly active users on its mobile and almost makes 70% of its advertising revenues on smartphones and tablets. It has greatly improved its in-house application into a lucrative platform. But Facebook is careful not to add too many features for fear of complicating its use. To circumvent this problem, the social network has opted to production – or purchase – all new applications. Each develops a specialty Facebook: in the image, the publication of content, communication or social. The aim is to attract users of the social network but also more generally mobile owners. Smartphone or tablet, everything must be done through a Facebook application.

Le social network does not skimp on the means. He has tried many things on the mobile, even persevering on failure. Some applications have already fallen into oblivion. Others were more lucrative, like Instagram, a photo sharing application acquired by Facebook in 2012 to about 747 million dollars (630 million euros). It now has more than 300 million unique users.

The social network Mark Zuckerberg has also invested heavily in communication, an indispensable tool for smartphone users. Facebook has two champions in the matter: WhatsApp Messenger and rather focus on the text. The first application was acquired by Facebook in 2014 to a staggering $ 19 billion. With WhatsApp, Facebook has a broad audience of 700 million users. However, the application brings him yet not a penny. WhatsApp does not display advertisements and officially never displayed. Fortunately for the finances of Mark Zuckerberg, his company has another nugget: Messenger, the old messaging Facebook is now an independent application and evolving. Gradually, the application is inspired by the classic features of a smartphone to help replace them.

On Messenger, you can send messages, videos or photos to Facebook friends but also to contact his laptop. The application starts just molting. Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg announced its openness to outside developers, into a broad platform for various services. For example, it can soon purchase products on Messenger by adding stores in their contact list. E-commerce, photo or video retouching, video games: mobile is the gateway to Facebook in areas that have already succeeded him, or outright unpublished. Messenger has finally with a call feature. In just one year, the service has grown in popularity and now represents 10% of calls made over the Internet. Facebook has understood this interest and prepare a new application specially designed for phone calls, according to the American press. Thus extending his empire to the very heart of our phones.
