Very popular right now, NASA used the Internet for a mission of the utmost importance . With the approach of the New Horizons Pluto probe in nearly three months, the US space agency ask applicants to submit names for all elements which are found in the coming months (craters, reliefs etc …).

Launched in 2006, New Horizons will make thousands of pictures of the planet Pluto and allow to recognize and baptized a few places that will later be analyzed by the space agency. So the OurPluto.org website that we are invited to vote for names or to propose, until April 7.

Ten possible categories

In practice, it is not going to propose the name of his dog or a football player. The site already has names where it will be voting. The IAU has identified ten possible names categories: famous explorers, historic space missions, scientists have contributed to space exploration, fictional explorers, legendary places of the spatial literature, vessels and artists related to space or science fiction, and finally, places, travelers and creatures of the mythology of the Underworld.

Flash Gordon, Jules Verne or Tintin

Among the many names that are found in the list, some French names are part of the lot. We thus find fictitious names like Flash Gordon or Tintin, but also well-known people who often head in the clouds like Jules Verne and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. From our side, we have proposed “Cadet spiff” in Calvin and Hobbes
