A 7 km from smoke column: Etna experiencing a particularly violent eruption – TF1

The Etna in Sicily, knew Friday rash among the most “energetic the last 20 years”, with a column of smoke and high gas 7 km, said the Italian Institute Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The eruptions are frequent on this volcano , the highest in Europe (3,350 meters), but this one, which began Thursday, is very impressive falls INGV. The smoke column was visible for kilometers around. This is particularly the “Voragine” crater which produces the most intense activity, with the presence of lava fountains, and an eruption column of magma, ash and gas high 7 km the wind now pushes to the south.
The activity of the airports of Catania, a city at the foot of the volcano, and Reggio Calabria, the toe of the Italian boot, separated from Sicily by a narrow arm of the sea, were disrupted , some flights had to be diverted, in particular to Lamezia Terme, a little further north. Catania Airport even had to be closed one hour at Friday midday to clean the tracks where the ash had accumulated. The Voragine crater has experienced in the past for similar eruptions, particularly in July 1998 and September 1999.
