To track asteroids, NASA turned to us – 24matins.fr

Who has not dreamed of to conquer the stars? Using software, we can now as a simple amateur astronomy, contribute to the asteroid NASA research. This software, developed after an innovation contest, enabling the US space agency to improve 15% detection of new astéroïdes.En partnership with the firm Plantary Resources, the software allows all budding astronomers to observe , track, analyze asteroids, some of which may become a danger to Earth.

“The Asteroid Hunter Data challenge was a success beyond what we expected. This helped to create software that makes a real difference in tracking asteroids and shows that more people can play an active role in protecting our planet, “said Jason Kessler, the head of the competition to Nasa.

Free and open to the public

NASA is a difficult agency to integrate this program therefore aims to best help the US agency, while having the impression of taking part in a giant treasure hunt. From any computer, it is now possible to verify independently and faster images and identify asteroids that deserve further analysis.

Asteroids, potentially dangerous to Earth

If the tracking of asteroids seems amusing in itself, it should be remembered that every year they graze the Earth and can be a threat, or most of the time, a huge opportunity to study. The latest was baptized in 2004 and BL86 crossed the Earth 1.2 million kilometers on 25 January. The next asteroid should approach the Earth is planned for 2027
